New for 2026
Learning Lab Launch
NHSE Electronic Prescribing Learning Lab -- This interactive learning resource, developed to support digital and pharmacy teams to optimise their electronic prescribing systems, is now available to access.
We will formally launch the Learning Lab at the NHSE ePrescribing Masterclass on Wednesday 25th February 2026. Please contact england.digitalmedicines@nhs.net for a link to the meeting and to learn more about how this resource was developed and see a Lab demo.
Do not miss the chance to test your EP system safety
Version 4 of the Electronic Prescribing Risk and Safety Evaluation (ePRaSE) tool went live on 30 October 2025 and runs until 31 January 2026!
You can register at eprase.nhs.uk and run through the assessment from the launch date (October 30).
What's new in this version?
- A new module to test paediatric prescribing safety
- The ability to test more than one EP system if used across a trust
Participation in this national programme is essential to ensure a consistent and robust assessment of electronic prescribing systems, helping us to collectively strengthen patient safety across the NHS.
What's involved?
Each trust will complete a self-assessment that reviews local system configurations, provides benchmarking against national data, and supports the case for investment in improvements. We encourage pharmacy, informatics, and patient safety teams to work together to register and complete the assessment within the timeframe.
Why is this important?
Electronic prescribing systems play a vital role in reducing medication-related risks. The ePRaSE tool offers tailored trust-level reports and national comparisons, helping identify areas for improvement and ensuring safer care for patients.
Please plan for the assessment
- Schedule the assessment into your workplans. It takes approx. 4-6 hours to complete and can be staggered.
- Have the right people available on the day. To build fictional patients with standard demographic and associated clinical attributes (medical conditions/lab results) necessary, you may need help from others who can admit patients and add lab results etc.
Access, Security, and Information Governance
- The tool is securely hosted on the HSCN where users can register using their NHS email at eprase.nhs.uk. Problems with access may be due to your trust's firewall. Please contact your IT dept if this is the case.
- The tool uses fictional patients (marked ZZZ as part of the name). No real patient information, personal or business sensitive data is being processed.
- Participation is voluntary and through signing up users consent to their trust taking part.
- All information and data are held securely by the ePRaSE team.
